1911 Race Gun/Comp?
Good Morning All,
Here is my problem... I've got a Colt 1911 thats about 15 years old, Its got a lot of work done to it, sights, mag well, extended everything, trigger job, etc etc etc. I would like to turn this pistol into more of a "Race Gun" for competition. (pins, steel, IDPA, ISPC) Not sure which yet, since there aren't to many clubs here in the Northeast that offer this. Basically the pistol isn't quite tight enough for "Bullseye" shooting, so I'm leaning towards one of the other diciplines. There in lies the problem... The gun is 90% of the way there, less a Compensator and C-More sight, my only problem is muzzle flip and recoil on follow up shots. These styles of shooting rely heavily on follow up shots and speed and with the ammo I shot today (Federal 230gr JHP Hi-Shok's, 12.00 per 50) its just not possible to keep it on target and get multiple shots off quickly.
This past weekend we went to the range to try out two different types of ammo, Balisticlean 185gr FMJ (which btw is junk, couldn't hold a 4" group at 10 yards) and Federal 185gr SWC Match which had VERY LOW recoil, fed well, and was pretty accurate, with one MAJOR drawback..... Its 29.00 per 50. Way to expensive to shot on a regular basis.
Here is my dilema... Does anyone think a Compensator will bring the recoil/muzzle flip down to say the levels of target loads while still shooting the relatively hot Federal Hi-Shok's? They feed well, hold very tight groups and are pretty cheap.
I've made about all the progress I think possible with Grip/stance in order to keep the muzzel down and get follow up shots off quicker, but there has to be something else I can do because IMO its still unmanageable for any type of speed event.
Thoughts, Opinions, recomendations, experiences? All are appreciated.
Thanks
